  Церковь Покрова на Нерли – Church of the Intercession on the Nerl River
  In fact this Medieval Church, though in Владимирская область – Vladimir Oblast, lies in an open field a few kilometers outside of Боголюбово – Bogolyubovo.

Numbering among the Белокаменные памятники Владимира и Суздаля – White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal, this Church is recorded as having been built in 1165 От Рождества Христова, though the Church may date to 1158 Anno Domini. In either case this Church is a very near contemporary of:

In northeastern Russia, the

  • Спасо-Преображенский Собор в Переславле-Залесском – Transfiguration Cathedral in Pereslavl-Zalessky (built 1152 to 1157);
  • Церковь Бориса и Глеба в Кидекши – Church of Boris and Gleb in Kideksha (built 1152); and also

In western Russia, the

  • Спасо Преображенский Собор в Пскове – Transfiguration Cathedral in Pskov (built 1156, unless pre- 1015).

Built entirely of white hewn stone in the Byzantine Église à Croix inscrite – croce inscritta – Крестово-купольный храм – Cross-in-square, the triple apse, four pillar Church is exquisite. Pictured here from the south southeast and a little down toward the Nerl River, visible slightly to the left in the photo, the hour is still early, about 6:20 on a mid-July day.

  Nearly the same composition is on the eastern and northern sides of the Church. That pictured here is on the southern side, a stonecarve base relief of King David the Psalmist flanked by birds and lions, symbolizing the conflict between good and evil. David holds a harp in his left hand, and with his right hand he crosses himself, stark symbolism reminding the world that King Saint David, like Abraham and Moses and other Old Testament prophets, is a Christian saint, not a Talmudic or atheist Jew.
